Hawaii Lions Foundation and Eye Bank

 

Who:

 

  The HLF is a non-profit chairitable corporation and a part of District 50, the Hawaii Lions.
Purpose:

 

  To coordinate sight and hearing related Lions activities as well as other humanitarian programs as decided by the HLF Trustees.
Trustees:

 

  14 elected Lions from the Lions Zones in Hawaii.  Each Zone has a trustee and each trustee serves a three year term. 
Activities:

Hawaii Lions Eye Bank and Makana Foundation - operates the Eye Bank and solicits and registers potential organ donors (Makana Foundation). 

Over a hundred cornea transplants are done each year in Hawaii.

(Over a 22 year period near 2200 cornea transplants).

Amblyopia Screening - Sight screening of pre-school children and children up to 7 or 8 years of age in public and private schools.

Lions Eye Health Program - Diabetes blood sugar and glaucoma awareness educational programs.

Schools uninsured or under insured funding for hearing and vision services.  This is for children whose families cannot afford medical services.

Used eyeglass recycling - collection, cleaning and recycling eyeglasses to assist those who cannot afford glasses.

Public education & health faires - disseminate information about the services of HLF & screenings for diabetes blood sugar, glaulcoma, blood pressure, blood fat analysis, etc.

Fund raising to continue the charitable work.

Sight is Beautiful Poster Contests - annual poster contests in Kindergarden through 6th grades for focus on the gift of sight.

Public relations - publicity of Club service activities through local media.

Scholarships - an annual scholarship to a student attending the U of H medical school on subjects related to vision and hearing.
